Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that the political turmoil arising from Myanmar’s military coup has become a nuisance for ASEAN, urging the bloc to expel Myanmar. This statement was made on February 10 following a meeting with the Thai Prime Minister on February 9 during his visit to Thailand.

“Myanmar should be expelled now. The situation in Myanmar should not disrupt ASEAN’s activities. We all must act with a firm agreement to give a strong message to the Myanmar military,” said the Malaysian Prime Minister.

Additionally, he warned that the Myanmar military must cease its brutalities against civilians. “Countries have internal policies and priorities, but in this era, no government should have the right to discriminate against its people, exclude them, threaten them, or commit acts of violence against their own citizens,” he emphasized.

During the meeting with Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, the Malaysian Prime Minister encouraged Thailand to play a larger role in resolving Myanmar’s crisis. “We don’t want external forces to meddle. We don’t want the Americans and Europeans to dictate what to do. If that happens, then we must take some action together. We need to work diligently to find a solution,” the Malaysian Prime Minister stated.
