Union Minister U Aung Myo Min met with members of the New Zealand Human Rights Commission, including the Chairperson, on May 9. During the meeting, it was reported that the Myanmar Human Rights Commission has not stood with the people who have suffered human rights violations and has instead aligned with the violent military junta, thus stifling the military’s brutality and atrocities. As a result, they called for the international community to not recognize the Human Rights Commission and to demand its disbandment by international human rights organizations.
Furthermore, civil society organizations have expressed a willingness to cooperate with any newly established Myanmar Union Human Rights Commission once it gains recognition from the current National Unity Government. They also discussed the need to advocate for international acknowledgment of the new Myanmar Union Human Rights Commission and raised concerns about the difficulties faced by Myanmar nationals in New Zealand regarding human rights issues.
