December 18, 2024

Ko Zaw Zaw Moe, a political activist and NLD youth member currently imprisoned in Insein Prison, has been sentenced to an additional 10 years in prison by a military tribunal today, bringing his total sentence to 31 years, according to sources.

Ko Zaw Zaw Moe was arrested by the junta in August 2021 in Sanchaung Township. He was previously sentenced to a total of 21 years in prison under various charges, including 3 years under Section 19(c) of the Arms Act, 10 years under Section 302(2) of the Penal Code for murder, 3 years under Section 17(1) of the Unlawful Associations Act, and 5 years under Section 51(c) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. This latest 10-year sentence was also handed down under the Arms Act.

He was arrested alongside three other activists: Ko Hein Ru Pa Aung, Ko Paing Soe Moe, and Ko Nyi Nyi Tun. Among them, Ko Hein Ru Pa Aung was sentenced to life imprisonment in October 2021 under Section 50(j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. Ko Paing Soe Moe received a total of 26 years in prison for various charges, including 3 years under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code for incitement, 3 years under Section 19(c) of the Arms Act, 10 years under Section 302(2) of the Penal Code, 5 years under an explosives-related provision, and 5 years under Section 51(c) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. Ko Nyi Nyi Tun was similarly sentenced to a total of 23 years under related charges.

Close sources stated that the prolonged imprisonment of these four political activists underscores the military junta’s relentless crackdown on dissent and opposition figures. All four continue to face severe conditions while serving lengthy prison terms imposed by military courts.
