Military Shelling of Displaced Persons Camp in Demoso Kills 13-Year-Old Child and Injures Four Others

In Demoso Township, Kayah State, the military launched an artillery attack on a displacement camp at approximately 5:25 PM on July 31, resulting in the death of a 13-year-old child and injuries to four others, as reported by the Demoso People’s Defense Force.

The assault involved heavy artillery fire from the 102nd Light Infantry Battalion and the 128th Infantry Battalion, which reportedly fired around ten rounds. A total of five displaced individuals were hit by the artillery, with the 13-year-old child tragically killed. One other person sustained a head injury and is receiving emergency medical treatment, while the remaining three victims are reported to be out of danger.

The military has been accused of intentionally targeting displaced civilians, with reports of at least seven instances of deliberate shelling resulting in the deaths of two civilians and injuries to twelve others, as stated by the Demoso People’s Defense Force.

Similarly, on July 30, around 2 PM, military forces attacked the village of Inpat in Hkamti Township, Sagaing Region, which has approximately 500 households. Reports indicate that three local residents were injured by heavy artillery, with one fatality. Among the deceased is an 86-year-old woman, known as Daw Wet, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including to one eye.

A local resident shared, “She passed away around 8 PM last night. The military launched an attack from the Kyar Pann Wai area, entering the village with a drone for reconnaissance. Shortly after, they began shelling from the surrounding areas, hitting the grandmother. Over ten rounds of heavy artillery were fired at Inpat village. Other nearby villages were also targeted. In Inpat village, two elderly women over 80 and a man were injured while fleeing, totaling three injured, with one elderly woman confirmed dead.”
