Increase in Displaced Persons in Karenni and Paletwa; UNOCHA Reports Rising Numbers of Refugees in Myanmar

September 3, 2022

Ongoing clashes between the military junta and the Arakan Army (AA) in Chin State’s Paletwa Township have led to an increase in displaced persons. Reports indicate that over 560 residents of Matesawa village fled to the Indian state of Mizoram due to aerial bombardments by the military council on September 1. These civilians have escaped to four villages in the Laugtlai district, approximately 60 miles away from Matesawa.

The Central Young Lai Association (CYLA) in Laugtlai district is reportedly assisting the displaced persons. The escalating military tensions between the Myanmar army and the Arakan Army in Rakhine State and Chin State have led to a rise in refugee numbers, prompting urgent calls for assistance, as stated in a September 2 release by UNOCHA.

According to the latest statement from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), there are at least 974,000 displaced persons in Myanmar since the military coup, with nearly 100,000 people displaced in August alone.
