Civilian Dies from Military Shelling in Thantlang; No Clarification on Church Shelling Incident

A civilian named Daw Ma Lay was confirmed dead in Thantlang Township, Karen State, due to shelling by military forces during a clash with the People’s Defense Force (PDF) on November 26. The incident occurred at around 6 a.m. when a combined force of local PDF units attacked a military base in the area, resulting in the death of 15 soldiers from the military.

After the initial confrontation, the military retaliated with airstrikes and artillery, which struck Daw Ma Lay’s house in Thantmo Taung village. Eyewitnesses report that Daw Ma Lay was sitting on a chair when the shell landed on her house, causing fatal injuries.

A villager noted that two nearby residents were also injured in the incident and are receiving treatment at the Taunggyi People’s Hospital. Additionally, unexploded shells were reported to have hit the Mother Mary Christian Church in Thantmo Taung village, raising concerns about safety as several unexploded shells remain in the area.

A local resident commented, “There are unexploded shells inside the Mother Mary Church. As of this evening, the situation remains unclear, and the church is still impacted by artillery fire.”
