Military Uses Video of Teacher U Zaw Myat Lin’s Torture as Threat

The military has tortured U Zaw Myat Lin, a teacher from Shwepyitha Agricultural Science School, by stabbing him in the mouth with a knife and using a bamboo stick, recording the assault on video to threaten others. According to U Kyaw Thein, an American agricultural expert with the Khin Ki Foundation, the military is using this video for intimidation. U Kyaw Thein was captured by the military in September 2021 and has endured severe torture for days. He stated that if he did not answer their questions, they would shoot him. The military showed the video of U Zaw Myat Lin being stabbed in the mouth and beaten with bamboo sticks. “They said, ‘If you don’t answer correctly, we can shoot someone like you. The video is in his phone, showing the scenes of a school teacher being stabbed in the mouth with a stick and another with a knife,'” U Kyaw Thein explained. U Kyaw Thein was also among those released from prison in November, along with economic advisor figures from Aung San Suu Kyi’s government. On the night of March 8, 2021, U Zaw Myat Lin, a member of the NLD party from Shwepyitha, was arrested by the military and police, and his body was returned the following day with severe injuries and signs of torture.
