Myanmar’s UN Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun called on the United Nations to invoke the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) principle and take immediate action against the Myanmar military. The appeal was made during a special session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) held on January 24 in New York.
The special meeting, titled “Social and Economic Actions to Prevent Genocide, War Crimes, Ethnic Cleansing, and Crimes Against Humanity,” provided the platform for Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun to highlight the urgent need for international intervention. He emphasized that the Myanmar military has been committing genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity, and that immediate social and economic sanctions are crucial to preventing further atrocities.
The Ambassador stressed that now is the critical time for the UN to use the R2P doctrine to hold the Myanmar military accountable for its crimes. He called for a unified international response to end the impunity the military has long enjoyed, urging the global community to stop the ongoing atrocities.
