Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra reportedly met with some rebel groups in Chiang Mai, Thailand, during April, according to Thai news outlet Thai Enquirer. On April 13, Thaksin and his delegation met with representatives from the Karen National Union (KNU), the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP), the Kachin Independence Organization (KNO), the Shan State Army (RCSS), and the National Unity Government (NUG) in Chiang Mai. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding the meeting between Thaksin and the rebel groups associated with the NUG. New Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa stated that Thaksin had the opportunity to meet and discuss with Myanmar’s revolutionary forces in a personal capacity, confirming to Thai media that such discussions would not involve the Thai government.
