The UN Security Council has reiterated its call to transfer the situation in Myanmar to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to ensure that those responsible for crimes are held accountable under the law. Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun emphasized the need for this action to deliver justice to the victims of ongoing atrocities in the country.
During the UNSC Arria-formula meeting on Myanmar held on May 29, hosted by the UK, the ambassador reiterated the need to confront the numerous violent crimes and human rights violations perpetrated by the military regime against the people.
He stressed the importance of international community engagement, particularly the UN Security Council, in taking effective measures to halt the military’s brutal actions and demonstrating that such behavior will not be tolerated.
The ambassador called for a complete cessation of arms, fuel, and financial support to the military and highlighted the urgent need to dismantle the system of impunity that the military operates under. He argued that the situation in Myanmar should be referred to the ICC to ensure justice for the perpetrators of these crimes.
Referring to the recent request from the IIMM on May 27 for information regarding the killing of two young people in Magway Region, he welcomed this inquiry as a positive step towards collecting evidence related to the military’s committed crimes and addressing its immunity.
Observing the prolonged nature of the Myanmar crisis, he emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach rather than fragmented responses, asserting that it is crucial to engage actively with Myanmar’s neighboring countries and the international community.
He pointed out that the ASEAN consensus and UNSCR 2669 remain unimplemented, urging both ASEAN and the UN Security Council to work more effectively and swiftly to resolve the situation in Myanmar.
The ambassador stressed that it is time for ASEAN and the UN to collaborate without delay to protect lives and that a firm decision from the Security Council regarding Myanmar could support ASEAN’s efforts, providing a vital step toward saving lives.
He welcomed the appointment of Ms. Julie Bishop as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar and expressed readiness to work with her to resolve the Myanmar crisis in a sustainable manner, aiming for a meaningful collaboration between the ASEAN chair and the Special Envoy.
U Kyaw Moe Tun stated that the only way to reclaim the future for the youth of Myanmar is to end military rule and establish a federal democratic union.
He urged ASEAN, the UN Security Council, and the UN to act effectively and in line with the aspirations of the Myanmar people, highlighting the urgent need for actions that can save lives and ensure a better future for the youth of Myanmar.
