Military Airstrikes in Ann, Thandwe, and Taungup Townships Result in Nearly 20 Civilian Casualties

Military airstrikes targeting Ann, Thandwe, and Taungup townships in Rakhine State have resulted in the deaths of at least 20 civilians, including displaced people, according to sources in the region. On October 29, around 6 p.m., airstrikes hit areas in Ann Township’s New Town Ward 4 and near an airfield where civilians, including displaced families, were gathered. At least 10 civilians, including women and children, lost their lives, and nearly 20 others sustained severe injuries.

“The number of casualties may rise as some of the displaced people affected by the bombing in Ann are still trapped. Rescue operations are difficult, and medical care is challenging amidst the ongoing conflict,” said a relief worker in the Rakhine region.

Military aircraft reportedly continued bombing operations in Ann Township in the early hours of November 1. Similarly, on October 30, in Taungup Township, airstrikes on Maung and Mee Kyaung To villages resulted in the deaths of five civilians and injuries to five others. The deceased include 14-year-olds Ma Su Myat Win and Ma Wut Yi Win, 48-year-old Daw Ma Kyant Tin, 49-year-old Daw Kyant Tin, and 31-year-old Ko Naing Lin Soe, according to a report by local news source APM.

Additionally, on October 29 and 30, airstrikes by the military council targeted Sin Khaung Monastery in Thandwe Township’s Sin Khaung Village, damaging the building and severely injuring the resident monk. Ratanamyae Monastery in Sin Khaung Village also suffered structural damage, and 58-year-old monk U Thiri Teza was reported to be in critical condition due to injuries sustained during the attack.
