Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun Calls for Support from UNHCR and Neighboring Countries for Myanmar Refugees Fleeing Military Violence

November 7, 2024 – Following the brutal attacks by the military junta, Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun, has urged the UNHCR and neighboring countries to provide assistance to the Myanmar civilians who have been forced to flee their homes. These individuals are escaping the violent military operations that have left many in dire conditions.

During the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations, held on November 6, 2024, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun highlighted the grave situation in Myanmar, where civilians, including Rohingya and others, are fleeing airstrikes, arbitrary arrests, and military brutality. He emphasized the urgent need for international support to assist the refugees, many of whom have found refuge in neighboring countries or remote areas.

Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun expressed concern about the challenges faced by refugees, particularly in neighboring countries where they are facing security risks and difficult living conditions. He noted that many are awaiting responses from the UNHCR and seeking international protection. Refugees are enduring severe emotional distress and hardships due to a lack of proper shelter, security, and access to essential services.

During discussions, the UNHCR was asked to consider how they could further support these refugees, especially in terms of their safety, health, and future, including the well-being of their children. Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun called for stronger international action to alleviate their suffering and protect their rights.

Highlighting the ongoing human rights violations in Myanmar, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun pointed to the military junta’s unlawful actions, including war crimes and crimes against humanity, as contributing to the ongoing refugee crisis. He called for accountability for those responsible for these atrocities and emphasized the importance of achieving a federal democratic union in Myanmar, as the key to resolving the crisis.
