Airstrikes in Mrauk-U Kill 28 Captives, Including Women and Children, and Injure 25

January 20, 2025

An official statement from the Arakan Army (AA) reported that airstrikes by the military junta in Mrauk-U Township resulted in the deaths of 28 captives, including women and children, and severe injuries to 25 others.

The airstrikes occurred on January 18 at 4:45 p.m., 4:46 p.m., and 4:47 p.m., targeting an area near Yantchaung where the captives were held. According to AA, the deceased included women and children, while some of the injured are in critical condition and may be added to the casualty list.

AA revealed that the victims were family members of military personnel captured during clashes in Rakhine State. Plans were underway for their release, and they had been temporarily detained at the site of the attack.

The junta has been systematically targeting civilian infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, markets, religious buildings, bridges, and refugee camps. These daily attacks are part of an ongoing pattern of war crimes, AA stated.

Since early 2025, the military junta has intensified aerial attacks. AA urged civilians to remain cautious of aerial threats, reduce internet and phone usage, and stay vigilant.
