A senior monk was killed when the junta shelled Thitseintpin Monastery in Saw Wah Village, Thayetchaung Township, Tanintharyi Region, according to sources close to the monk and local residents.
The monk, Venerable Bhaddanta Indobhasa, who was the abbot of the monastery, died after being struck by shrapnel from heavy artillery fired by junta forces stationed in central Dawei and near the Department of Border and Ethnic Affairs Office, residents said.
The shelling began around 3 PM on June 1 and continued throughout the day, with over 100 artillery rounds fired into the Shinmotthee village tract, where Saw Wah Village is located.
One of the shells hit Thitseintpin Monastery, killing the 66-year-old abbot, who had been ordained for 46 vassas (monastic rains retreats), according to locals.
