In Sittwe District, Mandalay Region, clashes erupted as militant soldiers attacked the village of Thayawadi using a gunboat, resulting in the deaths of two militants and four civilians, including one child, according to a spokesperson from the Khinghtauk Myaypin – Wetlet group.
On June 12, around 4 PM, militant soldiers, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, opened fire with heavy weapons on villages located on the western banks of the Ayeyarwady River while approaching the Thayawadi village pier using a commandeered gunboat. Local residents reported that this situation led to an intense battle.
The resistance forces of the township engaged the approaching militants, forcing them to retreat back to their gunboat. The confrontation resulted in the death of two soldiers on the boat and injuries to four others. Additionally, the gunboat suffered damage from an RPG-7 round fired by the resistance fighters, rendering it inoperable.
As of now, the militant soldiers have reportedly returned to their base in Khatong Village and are no longer attempting to advance into Thayawadi village.
Furthermore, at approximately 1:30 PM on June 12, the militant soldiers from Sittwe District reportedly launched an attack with 120mm artillery on Zigone, Sinthae, and Kyuangoo villages.
This attack caused damage to civilian homes in Zigone, resulting in the death of a 13-year-old child and injuries to two others. In Sinthae village, two civilians were killed by heavy artillery fire, while one civilian was killed and two others injured in Kyuangoo village, according to a spokesperson from the Khinghtauk Myaypin – Wetlet group.
