In 2024, nine political prisoners were extrajudicially killed, while twenty-two others died due to inadequate medical care in prisons and detention facilities across Myanmar, according to Ko Thaik Htun Oo, a leading committee member of the Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM).

Among those extrajudicially killed, Ma Nyo Bae Aye and Ko Lay Khine were reportedly executed unlawfully while being transported back from Wa Township Court. Ko Win Thiha and Ko Min Thu, also known as Maulawi Sheikh Min, were taken from Dawei Prison and executed. Ko Aung Kyaw Zin was allegedly killed after being removed from Monywa Police Station No. 1 by junta forces, while Ko Naing Win Htun, also known as Phar Pyote, died after severe torture by a prison warden in Myingyan Prison. Additionally, Ko Aung Naing Htun and Ko Kyaw Soe Win were reportedly shot in the head by prison guards at Myitkyina Prison. Ko Htet Yan Naing, also known as Htet Htet, succumbed to injuries sustained from severe beatings by prison wardens and fellow criminal inmates at Obo Prison. The report further revealed that among the twenty-two political prisoners who died due to a lack of medical care, there were three women, eighteen men, and one LGBT individual. At least 148 political prisoners were subjected to torture by prison officials and other inmates using batons and other implements. In 2024, 3,054 prisoners were transferred between facilities, including 1,783 political prisoners who were relocated to prisons far from their families. At least seventy-six political prisoners endured solitary confinement after torture sessions, facing both physical assaults and isolation punishments. Additionally, at least thirty-five political prisoners remain incarcerated with their children inside prison facilities. These findings highlight ongoing human rights violations and the dire conditions faced by political prisoners in Myanmar’s detention facilities.
