Nearly 23,000 Detained Under Military Service Law, NUG Reports

The National Unity Government (NUG) of Myanmar has reported that nearly 23,000 individuals have been detained under the military service law enacted by the military junta. According to the NUG’s statement released on January 1, 2025, a total of 22,765 people have been arrested, with 1,160 incidents of human rights violations documented.

The report outlines the unlawful actions of the military regime, detailing the various methods and forms used to target young people through harsh military practices. The NUG highlighted the systematic collection of data from human rights reports submitted to the Ministry of Human Rights, forming the basis for the release of the findings.

The statement includes a breakdown of human rights abuses by month, region, and age group. The highest number of detentions occurred in Rakhine State, with 3,849 arrests, followed by Mandalay Region with 3,709, and Ayeyarwady Region with 3,214.
