Nearly 2,000 war-displaced civilians from Bhamo, Kachin State, are facing food shortages after fleeing ongoing clashes between the military junta and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) along with allied forces, according to aid workers assisting the displaced communities.
The displaced families have taken temporary shelter in four Buddhist monasteries in Shweku, located west of Bhamo.
“These displaced people are in urgent need of food and medicine,” said a representative from the Zero Sukha Youth Charity, a Bhamo-based humanitarian organization.
“Right now, the most pressing need is a safe place. But in terms of immediate necessities, they require cooking supplies, food, and medicine. Many of them fled with only the clothes on their backs and had no time to gather essentials like blankets and clothing. While we are still compiling an exact headcount, we have observed that the majority of the displaced are women,” the representative added.
