A monk died and a civilian is receiving medical treatment after being brutally beaten and tortured by junta troops in Kyaukhtu town, Saw Township, Magway Region, according to local resident Ko Aung Gyi from Yaw Alintan.
The incident occurred on May 3, when a 40-year-old monk from Tapyin Village Monastery and his companion, 38-year-old civilian San Min Oo, traveled by motorcycle to Kyaukhtu to buy construction materials. They were reportedly arrested by intoxicated soldiers while shopping.
Both men were taken to a military camp in northern Kyaukhtu and subjected to an entire day of torture. The monk, identified as U Zin (secular name Than Min), suffered three stab wounds to the back, a fractured leg, severe bruising across his back, and facial injuries. San Min Oo sustained stab wounds to the thigh, facial bruising, and widespread back injuries.
After being released, they returned to Tapyin village, but the monk succumbed to his injuries on the evening of May 4. San Min Oo remains under medical care for his injuries.
